I am showing my age now! “The Wacky Races” was an American animated television series produced by Hanna-Barbera. The series, inspired by the 1965 slapstick comedy film The Great Race, features 11 different cars racing against each other in various road rallies throughout North America, with each driver hoping to win the title of the “World’s Wackiest Racer.” The cartoon had a large number of regular characters, with 23 people and animals spread among the 11 race cars. Wacky Races ran on CBS from September 14, 1968, to January 4, 1969. 17 episodes were produced, with each episode featuring two different races. If you want to see it, some episodes are available on YouTube. If you visit, YouTube, don’t forget to watch again, all of Haylee Lynn’s YouTube productions.
I loved the series as a child! And of course my favourite driver was always the beautiful, soft spoken American lady driver Penelope Pitstop! I always wanted her to win the races, which she did, on four occasions! She later went on to star in another cartoon series “The Perils of Penelope Pitstop”, but I was too old for cartoons then.
A chance comment by one of my work colleagues reminded me of the series. I was discussing best ways to work, and he commented “I would never go that way, it’s like the Wacky Races.”
Now – like all good slaves of Haylee Lynn, my beautiful, wonderful, Goddess is always on my mind, and soon I was thinking “What if, Goddess Haylee was like some modern day Penelope Pitstop, and HER closest slaves and admirers were in the race, maybe it would go something like this,-
Welcome to the Wacky Races! In pole position today we have Hypnotic Haylee in her Hillman Hunter. We also have Cautious Claude in is Cortina Convertible. For those of you who don’t know they are both 1960s British cars. Then we have Keith Davis in his mobile soup kitchen. Next we have John David beside his fire engine. We have Terry Jones beside his police van. They are about to get into their vehicles, and Indigo! No I don’t mean “In they go!” I mean we have the lovely Princess Indigo all the way from Britain with her horse-drawn chariot, in the style of Boudicca. We have Eric in his co-cart pulled by two husky dogs. Then we have Serville Wayfarer, in his truck. The starter is raising his flag, and they are off! Or at least most of them are, except Hypnotic Haylee’s Hillman Hunter has let her down and refusing to start. She is getting out of her car. What is she going to do? She is putting her two fingers into her mouth and whistling! I am not sure how on earth this is meant to help her! Hang on a minute. What is that? Oh it is Haylee’s pet dragon, come down to rescue her! She is getting on the dragon, and she is away! She is catching the others up quickly!
It is still neck and next as they go into the final straight. I think it will be a photo finish! I don’t know who has won; I’ll have to look at the picture. Oh no! Haylee stopped just before the finish line so that she could be photographed and post her picture on Facebook! So that means she hasn’t won.
Thank you for reading once again dear reader! I hope you enjoyed my little journey back to childhood. Did you ever watch The Wacky Races and/or The Perils of Penelope Pitstop? If so, answer in the comments below!
